Speaking at NDI Masterclass event

🌍 I am thrilled to share my experience participating in yesterday’s seminar focused on the critical issues surrounding democracy and cross-party collaboration.

A heartfelt thank you to the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and my dear friend Birgitta Ohlsson for hosting this important event. It was an honor to join esteemed speakers such as Cecilia Malmström, Giacomo Filibeck, and Frank Habineza, each bringing invaluable insights from their diverse political backgrounds.

During our discussions, we addressed the alarming trend of democratic backsliding that we have witnessed over the past 18 years. This issue transcends borders, affecting even the most established democracies, which are grappling with challenges like polarization and disinformation.

I emphasized two major forces contributing to this decline: the rise of populism, which often offers simplistic solutions to complex problems, and the external interference from authoritarian regimes that exploit vulnerabilities in democratic systems.

Yet, amidst these challenges, I also shared a message of hope. We see inspiring examples of resilience in the fight for democracy, from Poland’s shift back toward democratic values to Moldova’s citizens standing firm against external pressures. These instances remind us that democracy is not defeated but requires our collective effort to thrive.

Education is pivotal in this fight. By fostering critical thinking and a deep understanding of democratic principles, we can empower citizens to navigate an increasingly complex information landscape. As we move forward, let us remain vigilant and committed to defending our democratic institutions. Together, we can build societies where every voice is heard, and democracy flourishes for generations to come.

Thank you once again to NDI and Birgitta Ohlsson for your leadership and dedication to this vital cause!
