EPP Group statement on the Iranian authorities’ violence against protestors in Iran

We condemn the Iranian authorities’ violence and the regime’s crackdown against protestors throughout Iran, following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who was killed after being arrested for allegedly wearing an improper hijab.

We call on President Raisi to stop the pushback against the protestors immediately and to abolish the compulsory hijab law. The Iranian authorities must ensure that fundamental rights of its citizens are respected, including that those who are under any form of detention are not subject to any form of mistreatment.

We call on the international community to hold the Iranian regime accountable for its actions. An independent competent authority must promptly, impartially and effectively investigate Mahsa Amini’s tragic death and all related allegations of torture and violence. Targeted measures should be imposed on the Iranian officials who are responsible for serious human rights violations.

The people of Iran deserves freedom!
