Dear President,
We hope that this letter finds you in a good health. We are deeply worried about the further worsening situation in Belarus and hope that an additional week until the Special European Council meeting will allow to attain a strong and unified position regarding ongoing events in Belarus.
We see the following three points, which require an undivided attention and must be included into the conclusions of the upcoming Special European Council meeting:
Deplore the self-inauguration of Aliaksandr Lukashenka and continue the policy of not recognizing him as a Head of State of the Republic of Belarus. The 9 August elections were fraudulent and the results were not recognized neither by the Belarusian people, who see Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya as their President-elect, nor by the EU.
Add Aliaksandr Lukashenka to the EU sanctions list. On 4 September, we presented you with such request signed by over 100 Members of the European Parliament and, sadly, no tangible results were achieved so far.
Maintain the issue of nuclear safety as a major concern for the EU and demand the deferral of the planned commissioning of the Astravets NPP until international nuclear safety standards have been met, obligatory public hearings were held, and the political situation in Belarus has stabilised.
The above expressed position is reflected in the European Parliament’s resolution of 17 September 2020 on the situation in Belarus and the upcoming recommendation report on relations with Belarus, which was voted in the Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs on 21 September.
Tomorrow will mark 50 days since the Belarusian people are marching the streets and calling for the release of all prisoners arrested on political grounds, for the halt of violence and for a new and transparent election. It is shameful that it takes so long for the EU to react and to develop an action plan how to aid the victims of Lukashenka’s regime and to support the Belarusian people’s aspirations to freedom and democracy.
We expect that upon your leadership the upcoming Special European Council meeting will present long overdue results.
Sincerely,
