Political Overview

Throughout his political career, David Lega has consistently used his platform to advocate for human rights, justice, and equality. From his role as Deputy Mayor of Gothenburg to serving as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP), his focus has always been on work that has a meaningful and lasting impact.

One of David’s significant areas of work has been in the Middle East, where he has advocated for peace and cooperation, particularly through the Abraham Accords Network, which he founded during his time in the European Parliament. This initiative promotes dialogue and collaboration between Israel and its neighboring countries, focusing on the historic peace agreements known as the Abraham Accords. His efforts aim to foster long-term stability and partnerships in the region.

David’s dedication to combatting antisemitism is deeply rooted in his family history and personal experiences. Having lost much of his father’s side of the family in the Holocaust, the fight against rising antisemitism has become one of David’s most urgent priorities. His advocacy focuses on increasing awareness and pushing for the widespread adoption of the IHRA definition of antisemitism. David sees this as a fight not only for the Jewish people but for the protection of human rights and dignity worldwide.

In addition to his work in the Middle East, David has been a strong voice in Europe’s response to Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine. He has consistently advocated for Ukraine’s sovereignty, human rights, and the need to hold Russia accountable for its aggression. His work in the European Parliament has focused on pushing for sanctions against Russia, support for Ukraine, and defending democracy and the rule of law in the face of authoritarian threats.

David has also been deeply involved in efforts to combat terrorism. One of his proudest achievements was securing majority support in the European Parliament for his amendment to terror designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), calling for its recognition as a terrorist organization due to its role in human rights abuses and destabilizing activities in the region. This victory was a significant step in addressing threats to global security.

David’s work on human rights has been recognized on the international stage, particularly through his nomination for the Sakharov Prize for Mahsa Amini and the women of Iran, in honor of their courage in standing up for freedom, human dignity, and justice in the face of oppression. This nomination highlights his commitment to advocating for those who face persecution and oppression, particularly in repressive regimes.

During his time in the European Parliament, David worked extensively in the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Subcommittee on Human Rights, tackling complex issues such as the protection of persecuted minorities, addressing human rights violations, and navigating geopolitical conflicts. One of his proudest achievements was the successful recognition of the Uyghur genocide, which came after years of determined advocacy.

As Co-Chair of the Intergroup on Children’s Rights, David led initiatives to protect children from exploitation and abuse. His efforts resulted in key legislative changes that have improved safeguards for children, particularly in the online space.

David’s political journey has always been defined by a focus on defending the most vulnerable and driving legislative changes that promote justice, equality, and human rights. Soon, you will be able to explore these contributions further through the upcoming subcategories.
